Right now, my school is online-only due to the pandemic. But one thing that helps me keep my sanity is keeping my classroom ready as if we're going back to school as usual. Here are a few photos of my classroom as it is now!
I have these great music concept posters and an "In Our Class, We Are..." poster that I love. During the first week back after every break, we read through the "In Our Class" poster to remind ourselves what our class values are. I have my boomwhackers organized from low do up to high do, and below I have matching rainbow baskets for xylophone bars (C=do)!
My undergrad degree is actually in film scoring (writing music for film/TV) and my "side gig" is writing music for TV, so the theme in my room is "Show Biz!"
I have three sections of these risers, which are fantastic – super easy to fold and move to the gym for concerts! The minion is showing "choir posture!"
My vowel sound posters remind my singers which sounds are the most important when singing! My piano usually faces out toward them, so they can always see the posters.
During my recorder units, I have these ancient fingering posters up so that my students can refer to them whenever they need to. Since this photo was taken, I've removed the solfa posters and swapped out my guitars for a class set of brand new ukuleles!
What are your favorite things in your classroom? Let me know in the comments below!
My name is Nick Dolan, and I'm an elementary music teacher and choir director. I'm here to talk about teaching music!
